Inside Our Taxco Workshop: How a Piece of Spratling Silver Is Made

Taxco de Alarcón sits at roughly 1,800 meters above sea level in the mountains of Guerrero, Mexico. The air is cool even in summer. The streets are too narrow for most cars. And somewhere in the colonial heart of the city, in a workshop that has been operating since 1931, a silversmith is bent over a workbench, doing something that hasn't changed much in nearly a century.

This is where Spratling Silver is made. Not in a factory. Not by machine. By hand, one piece at a time, by master silversmiths who have spent their careers learning a craft that was revived here by William Spratling and passed down through generations of Taxco artisans.

Here's what that process actually looks like.

The Workshop Today

The workshop occupies a space that feels lived-in in the best possible way. The benches are worn smooth. The tools — files, hammers, mandrels, burnishers — are arranged with the particular logic of someone who knows exactly where everything is without looking. The smell is distinctive: a mix of metal, flux, and the faint sweetness of beeswax.

Our silversmiths are not assembly-line workers. Each one is a specialist who has trained for years, often beginning as an apprentice in their teens and spending a decade or more mastering the full range of techniques before working on finished pieces. Many come from families with generations of silversmithing history in Taxco. The knowledge is in their hands as much as their heads.

When an order comes in, a single silversmith typically sees a piece through from beginning to end. This isn't just a quality control decision — it's a philosophy. A piece made by one pair of hands has a coherence that a piece assembled from components made by different people simply doesn't.

Step One: The Design

Every Spratling Silver piece begins with a design rooted in the visual vocabulary William Spratling developed: Pre-Columbian motifs, modernist geometry, forms drawn from nature. Some designs have been in continuous production since the 1930s. Others are newer interpretations of the same design principles.

Before any silver is touched, the design is refined and a master model is created. This model becomes the template from which all subsequent pieces are made — the standard against which every finished piece is measured.

Step Two: Wax Modeling

For cast pieces, the process begins with wax. A silversmith carves or builds up a wax model of the piece — a process that requires both technical precision and artistic sensitivity. The wax must capture every detail of the final design, because whatever is in the wax will be in the silver.

This is painstaking work. A complex piece might take hours of wax carving before the silversmith is satisfied. The wax is checked against the master model, adjusted, refined. Only when it's right does the process move forward.

Step Three: Casting

The wax model is encased in a plaster-like investment material and heated in a kiln. The wax melts and burns away — this is the "lost wax" casting process, a technique that dates back thousands of years and was used by the very Pre-Columbian civilizations that inspire Spratling's designs. The resulting cavity is an exact negative of the wax model.

Molten .950 silver is then poured or centrifugally cast into the mold. When the metal cools and the investment is broken away, what emerges is a rough silver casting — recognizable as the final piece, but still raw, still needing work.

Step Four: Hand-Finishing

This is where the real craft lives. The rough casting is cleaned, and then the silversmith begins the painstaking work of hand-finishing: filing away casting lines, refining edges, sharpening details that may have softened slightly in the casting process. This work is done with files of different profiles, with gravers, with small hammers — tools that haven't changed fundamentally in centuries.

For pieces that incorporate texture — the stippled surfaces, the hammered finishes, the oxidized recesses that give depth to Spratling's geometric designs — this stage involves additional work. Texture is applied by hand, one mark at a time. No two pieces are identical, because no two hands make identical marks.

Step Five: Polishing

Polishing is both science and art. Different areas of a piece may receive different treatments: high-polish on raised surfaces to catch light, matte or oxidized finishes in recessed areas to create contrast and depth. The interplay of these finishes is what gives Spratling Silver its characteristic visual complexity — the way a piece seems to have different qualities depending on the light and the angle.

Final polishing is done by hand with soft cloths and compounds, bringing the silver to its finished luster. This is the last chance to catch any imperfection, and our silversmiths take it seriously.

Step Six: Quality Inspection

Before a piece leaves the workshop, it goes through a thorough quality inspection. Dimensions are checked against the master model. Surfaces are examined under magnification. Closures, clasps, and any moving parts are tested for smooth operation. Anything that doesn't meet the standard goes back for correction — or, if the issue can't be corrected, is melted down and started again.

This is not a rubber-stamp process. Our silversmiths have high standards, and they apply them without compromise.

The Certificate of Authenticity

Every piece of Spratling Silver ships with a certificate of authenticity. This document is more than a piece of paper — it's a record of provenance. It confirms that the piece was made in our Taxco workshop, by our silversmiths, in .950 silver, according to the design standards established by William Spratling.
